Workshop on Basic Bioinformatics for Microbiologists

 

Date&Time:   May 19-20, 2014; 0900 – 1700 hrs.

Place:                         Faculty of Medical Technology, Prince of Songkla University, Hatyai, Songkhla, Thailand 90110, Room  No: 307

Objectives:

This training course is designed to give graduate students, postdocs and microbiologists an understanding of basic bioinformatics for everyday use in microbial genetics and genomics. This course will also give the participants working knowledge of research on molecular epidemiological investigation of bacterial infectious diseases.

 

Contents and Schedules:

May 19, 2014:

0900 - 1200 hrs.

Lecture 1:       Bacterial genomes and basic bioinformatics tools for microbiologists

Practice 1:

Part I:              Genome viewers

The participants will be provided a hand on training on using genome browser and annotation tools such as Artemis and other web-based software to visualize microbial genomes.

Part II:             Manipulation of DNA Sequences

The participants will learn basic techniques in editing, manipulating, and aligning DNA sequences. Software tool such as BioEdit (Ibis Biosciences Inc. USA) will be used.

 

1300 – 1700 hrs.

Lecture 2:       Comparative genomics

Practice:

Part III:            Genomic comparison tools

The participants will be trained on basic comparative genomics. Participants will be able to perform genomic alignments and identify genomic differences. Artemis Comparison Tool (ACT) will be used.

The participants will be assigned to analyze TB genome data. Each group will present and discuss their findings.
